A-league Round 2 Multi of the Week

After a disastrous start to our A-league multi in a week that saw all the favourites either lose or draw their matches, we look to improve heading into Round 2 of the A-league season.

To start off our multi we will take Adelaide United at home against the Western Sydney Wanderers. The Red and Black will need time to gel, as their squad as had a total overhaul and their combinations and communication was non-existent in their loss to the Roar. They had defensive issues as they gave away a goal and were unable to clear their line on the other two occasions that they conceded. The Reds were able to hold onto a goalless draw against the Victory and they will be able to do better against a much weaker side this Friday.

The Newcastle Jets had a strong showing in Wellington and they return home with the three points to face Sydney FC on Saturday. However, the Jets have one of the worst records against the Sky Blues as they have only defeated them on five occasions and have lost 17 of the 30 matches. Despite showing improvement since last season Graham Arnold’s men will be too strong for the Novocastrians.

The Melbourne derby is the block buster match of the weekend as the two sides look to brush off shaky starts to push for the premiership glory. The Victory have had the recent success against their cross town rivals and despite being held goalless against the Reds last weekend their attack was still potent however uncharacteristically Besart Berisha was unable to capitalise on multiple opportunities. The Albanian has scored five goals in the four meetings against City and I expect him to extend that record this weekend and give his side the win.

Perth Glory and Wellington Phoenix were both favourites to win their matches last weekend and weren’t able to live up to their expectations. Nathan Burns departure from the Phoenix was felt at full force, as they weren’t able to finish their chances as a lot of good opportunities were squandered. The Glory were unlucky not to go ahead early against the Mariners as Garcia was wrongly ruled offside when he found the back of the net, it would prove costly as minutes later they were trailing 1-0. However, they only have themselves to blame for the loss as they gave up two silly penalties, which practically gifted the Mariners two goals. They will be sure not to make the same mistake this weekend and as the Phoenix have to travel a long way for the match, I am expecting fatigue to play its part and the home side will register its first win of the season.
